Therefore, there is no champion for walking, no sexy media coverage for common walkers. Walking is the most basic mode of transporting oneself, of experiencing the city, and is the glue of all other modes of transport. In Jakarta, you cannot show off while walking. No expensive and stylish clothes. T-shirt is the best apparel. No "gears". No showing of any level of significant consumption. Only your body. In fact, walking in the heat and hate of Jakarta cityscape, it is like being naked.

In the context of Jakarta, I think the biking campaign has made us overlook the more basic inconvenience of the city: Walking. Biking has become a fashionable lifestyle because it involves certain consumption that one can show-off, and use to project identity into the public space. Walking, on the other hand, is only about our bodies. It is so basic, and because of the condition of city, one cannot "show off" and project one's identity into public space only by walking in the harsh, heating and hating cityscape. One can neither be beautiful nor showing any level of consumption in Jakarta's cityscape. Walking is naked.
