Exhibition: YUDI YUDOYOKO I am the Earth (and other series)

curated by Agung Hujatnikajennong

Friday, 27 January 2012, 7 PM
Accompanied by a musical performance by Agus Suwage and Friends
at Amphiteater – Selasar Sunaryo Art Space

Artist talk / discussion: Sunday, 29 January 2012, 3 PM
at Bale Handap – Selasar Sunaryo Art Space

Yudi Yudoyoko (born in Jakarta, 1963) is an Indonesian artist who has lived and worked between Montevideo, Uruguay, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, since 2003. Known for his performance, installation and drawing, he was one of the artists who actively involved with experimental art practices in Bandung in the early 1990s. For two decades, Yudoyoko’s practice has been in constant evolution—often marked by radical changes, ruptures and leaps—that accompanied his life journey, artistic experimentation and rejection towards the establishment.

This exhibition is divided into two parts. The first section shows Yudoyoko’s recent series of digital prints and murals, entitled “I am the Earth”, which wer done during his stay in Latin America. These works reflect the artist’s cosmological views about human life as inseparable part of the nature: flora, fauna, soil and all the earth’s dwellers. While the second part is an effort to revisit Yudoyoko’s works that were done in the 1990s. Consisting of installations, objects, drawings and collages, this section displays “A Man and an Egg” (1993), “Original Sin” (1995) and “Raja Congcot” (1995 – present). These three series of work reflect the artist’s comments, sarcasm, criticism and existential statements on his surrounding community and civilization.

This exhibition does not constitute a retrospective presentation of Yudoyoko’s artistic journey as a whole, rather only displays a few important episodes in his career. In a glimpse, Yudi Yudoyoko’s artistic journey indeed tend to be non-linear. But precisely through it, we can learn a lot about the nature of his creative process. Yudoyoko’s artistic temperament cannot be simplified through identification of personal styles or medium. He is an artist who has made his artistic experimentation a way of life, and upheld the definition of art as a totality of life itself.

Urban Communities and Cosmopolitan Cultures: the Emergence of the Southeast Asian Port-City

Rujak Talk Series 01
By Dr. Su Lin Lewis (University of Cambridge, University of California at Berkeley)
Tusday, December 20th, 2011
14:00-16:30 PM
In the Foyer of The Goethe Haus, Jalan Sam Ratulangi 9-15, Menteng, Jakarta.
Free, but please register here by December 16th, 2011, at 16:00.
Seats limited to 30. First registered first served.
In Southeast Asian history, port-cities were key centers for maritime trade and sites where diverse ethnic groups lived and traded side by side.  How did these urban communities evolve over time?  Did these groups ever interact, or did they exist separately, as one colonial scholar observed, as ‘plural societies’?  How were they affected by the colonial experience? This paper looks briefly at the evolution of urban planning in the colonial era, while focusing on venues where diverse ethnic groups contributed to the emergence of a new public sphere – in public spaces, associations, via the press, in schools and in sharing their experiences of modern, popular culture. It focuses largely on Penang, Rangoon, and Bangkok, with some references to Singapore, Batavia/Jakarta and other Indonesian port-cities.  The talk argues that in viewing Southeast Asian history through the lens of these ‘cosmopolitan’, or multi-ethnic port-cities, we might come to a more inclusive understanding of the region’s rich and connected history, one which left important legacies for civil society and public culture in the post-colonial and contemporary period.

Dr. Su Lin Lewis finished her Phd at the University of Cambridge in 2010. She is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies at the University of California Berkeley.

ARCHITECTURE/LITERATURE

Workshop on relationship between architecture and literature

held by Avianti Armand and Elisa Sutanudjaja

Architecture and Literature has for so long inspired one another. And Italian culture has two masterpieces that inspired the world most: Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri and Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. Divine Comedy is rendered by bizarre image of the world construction, while Calvino’s work, Invisible Cities, crafted and detailed with beautiful and amazing architectures, had changed our way of thinking about a city forever. In this workshop, we will see in details how the two fields– architecture/literature–collide, intersect, effect, and superimpose one another.

ARCHITECTURE/LITERATURE

The leading question of the 2011 symposium is how innovative artistic animation of public spaces can contribute to building more sustainable cities. Community sustainability is viewed as encompassing and intertwining environmental, cultural, social, and economic sustainability and resiliency. In the framework of the symposium there will be a special presentation and event with artists involved in Coimbra’s 1976 “Week of art in the streets” and special art commissions organized by Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra (CAPC), a Centre for Contemporary Art.

The symposium topics will be also explored in two artistic workshops (Friday, 30th of September 2011):

1.       Theatre workshop ‘Animation of Public Space through Innovative Artistic Practices’: Sustainable Lifestyles Project
