Managing Trash: “If the poor can do it, why can’t the rich?”

Do you know where your personal and household wastes go?  Do you care?  For Yuyun Ismawati these are issues of utmost concern. In the poorer regions of Bali, Java and the outer islands, there is no equivalent to the 200 hectare Bekasi landfill that conveniently hides 6,000 tons of Jakarta waste every day — out of sight and out of smell. People in other areas of Indonesia have no alternative than to live with their waste. No option that is until a small group of passionate, determined and motivated people started to make a difference. Yuyun, the Director of the Balifokus foundation, will discuss how this work has impacted the living conditions of these people. She will take that often meaningless word “empowerment” and demonstrate how it can work at the grass-roots level.  She will introduce us to a local initiative which is sustainable because local people are directly involved in planning and paying for the project.  From her experiences and disappointments, she will discuss how understanding, coordination, and prior planning with municipal officials, NGOs, community leaders, and kampong dwellers can improve the chance of success of a project.  ?Why can’t projects like this be done in Jakarta? Yuyun will tell us why and offer encouragement.
